It has been suggested (see item 72 in the Spice section) that any plastic surgeon who is willing to
perform a labiaplasty (trimming the inner labia) would also do hood removal surgery. In fact, on
the basis of several queries made to plastic surgeons around the country who do cosmetic surgery
of any kind, I think it is fair to say that many are willing to perform this surgery, and so you
should be able to find one in your area to do it for you, though in some areas, it may take some
persistence. The procedure is a very simple one, relative to other procedures these surgeons can
do, so even if they have not actually performed the procedure before, it should be no problem for
any trained plastic surgeon to do this surgery and get excellent results.
The following are clinics where I know for a fact the surgery is actually performed by surgeons
experienced with the procedure, or where there are appropriately trained surgeons who are at least
willing to consult with patients interested in having the surgery. (If a surgeon is simply unwilling
to perform a certain sort of surgery in general, he or she will generally refuse even to schedule
consultation meetings with patients about that sort of surgery. They might or might not, in such
circumstances, be willing to refer interested patients to other surgeons who are willing to consider
doing the surgery. Accordingly, a surgeon who is willing to consult a patient about a form of
surgery can be presumed to be willing in principle to perform that surgery if the patient seems to
qualify for it.) All surgeons require preliminary visits for an evaluation of the candidate, and a
surgeon may decide against performing the surgery on some people. If this happens, it is not
unreasonable to consult with another plastic surgeon. Some women who think the surgery would
be good for them may not actually be good candidates for it. If more than one plastic surgeon
who is willing to consider doing the surgery on you tells you that you are not a good candidate for
it, you should reconsider your plan to have it done.
Because many women will feel more comfortable consulting a female plastic surgeon, I have
made a special effort to find and list several of these. I have generally tried to indicate, where
possible, those doctors whose practices include this procedure as a specialty, as opposed to a
procedure they are simply willing to perform. As a general rule, plainly, the more experienced
surgeons will provide more reliable results.
